The new supreme leader of Iran was wounded during the first day of the ongoing war, three Iranian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity have said.
A report published on Wednesday by The New York Times cited the officials, who said that Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the previous supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was wounded in the legs on February 28, the first day of the joint US-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic.
The Iranian sources claimed that Mojtaba was conscious after being injured, adding that he is currently in hiding at a secure location.
Iran’s Assembly of Experts this week formally tapped Mojtaba to succeed his father as the Iranian head of state.
However, according to the report, communication with Mojtaba’s hiding place is extremely limited, restricting his ability to directly oversee the regime’s affairs.
The Times report also cited two Israeli military officials who confirmed that Mojtaba suffered leg wounds during a strike on the first day of the war.
It is unclear, however, when and where the strike occurred, or how serious Mojtaba’s injuries are.
According to the report, the strikes on a Tehran compound that killed Ali Khamenei also killed Mojtaba’s mother, wife, and a son.
Mojtaba was the target of another assassination attempt this past Friday, before he was officially named as Iran’s new supreme leader.
The strike reportedly was carried out at a large underground complex under the supreme leader’s offices in Tehran. However, Mojtaba was not present at the time.
President Donald Trump hinted on Sunday that the US could assassinate the new supreme leader.
The new supreme leader “is not going to last long,” Trump told ABC News. “He’s going to have to get approval from us.”
“If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long. We want to make sure that we don’t have to go back every 10 years, when you don’t have a president like me that’s not going to do it.”
