Iran’s president injured in Israeli strikes, state media claims

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian among the senior leaders injured in an Israeli airstrike on Iran’s national security council during last month’s 12-day war, state media claims.

Iran’s president and several other senior officials were injured in an Israeli airstrike during last month’s 12-day war, Iranian government-controlled media has reported.

According to the Fars News Agency, the mouthpiece of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, President Masoud Pezeshkian suffered a leg injury when Israeli warplanes bombed Iran’s Supreme National Security Council last month.

On the morning of June 16th, three days into Israel’s Operation Rising Lion, IDF fighter jets struck the lower floors of the Supreme National Security Council building, dropping six munitions while the council was in session.

The building was damaged and power cut to the lower floors, the Fars report claimed.

Along with Pezeshkian, Iran Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Judiciary chief Mohseni Ejei and other senior Iranian officials were said to be present at the council meeting during the attack.

While the airstrikes appeared to be aimed at sealing off the building, preventing escape or rescue and disrupting airflow, the report claimed – comparing it to the 2024 IDF bombing in Beirut which killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah – the Iranian officials managed to evacuate the building via a special emergency hatch.

Several officials, including Pezeshkian, reportedly suffered minor leg injuries during the evacuation.

The Fars report also claimed that the timing and precision of the attack has fueled suspicions that Israel was aided by a highly placed spy.

In an interview which debuted last week, Pezeshkian told podcaster Tucker Carlson that Israel had attempted to assassinate him.

“They did try, yes,” Pezeshkian said. “They acted accordingly, but they failed.”

Last week, a senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps general, Mohsen Rezaei, claimed that there were no injuries in the IDF attack on the Supreme National Security Council.
