Israel probes possible Iranian link to MIT scientist’s murder

Loureiro was considered one of the leading figures in his field, with key roles in advanced research related to nuclear physics.

Israeli officials are examining the possibility that the fatal shooting of a senior nuclear scientist at his home in the United States may have involved Iranian operatives.

Prof. Nuno Loureiro, 47, a world-renowned nuclear science and plasma physics expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was shot and killed Monday evening at his residence in Brookline, Massachusetts.

According to a report in The Jerusalem Post, Israeli officials are now looking into whether Iran could have played a role in the murder, given Loureiro’s prominence in nuclear science and his past public positions.

Loureiro was considered one of the leading figures in his field, with key roles in advanced research related to future energy technologies and nuclear physics. His work placed him at the forefront of scientific efforts with potential strategic implications.

Following news of the killing, some Israeli media outlets described Loureiro as Jewish and publicly supportive of Israel, citing what they said were images of a “Stand with Israel” sign outside his residence.

Those details have not been confirmed by U.S. authorities, which have not characterized the shooting as politically motivated or as a hate crime.

Sources familiar with the matter have stressed that there is currently no definitive evidence tying the killing to Iran or to any state or intelligence operation.

Investigators in the United States continue to treat the case as an open homicide inquiry, while Israeli officials monitor developments closely amid broader concerns over Iranian threats to Israeli and pro-Israel figures abroad.
