Israel is ramping up attacks against Iranian supply lines in Syria to prevent the flow of arms from Iran to Iranian and Hezbollah forces based in Syria and Lebanon, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The article was published Monday as Israel reportedly launched another attack against Iranian forces in Syria, this time in Aleppo.

In June, Israel reportedly targeted a compound on the Syria-Iraq border. Israel has also carried out attacks against military targets closer to home in Damascus, Homs and Hama, foreign media reports say.

Israel considers it a central objective as part of ensuring Israel’s defense to roll back Iran’s territorial expansion before the US draws down its forces, the Wall Street Journal said, pointing to the June strike as indicating an urgency in carrying out attacks now and not later.

Israel’s air attacks have focused almost exclusively on targets located in southern and central Syria.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied carrying out these attacks.

The aim of Israel’s reported attacks was to signal that it will not tolerate Iranian attempts to establish a so-called land bridge running from Iran through Iraq and Syria to Lebanon, the official said.

Israel has said it is specifically concerned with the spread of long-range missiles and anti-aircraft defense systems, the Wall Street Journal reported.
