Israel strikes Iran’s South Pars gas field in coordinated move with the US over Hormuz tensions

Israel struck Iran’s South Pars gas field on Wednesday in an operation coordinated with the United States, according to multiple reports, in what officials described as part of an effort to pressure Tehran over threats to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Channel 12 reported that the strike on the offshore facility in the Persian Gulf, the largest gas field in the world, was carried out in coordination with Washington and intended to convey a message from US President Donald Trump regarding maritime access through the strategic waterway.

“Israel assisted operationally in order to send an American message,” a senior Israeli official told Channel 12. “Either the Strait of Hormuz will be opened and the mines will be removed by the Iranians, or the entire [natural gas] facility will be destroyed, as will other energy facilities.”

A separate report by Axios said the operation had been approved by the Trump administration, citing two senior Israeli officials. According to the report, a US defense official also confirmed the coordination.

Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman, Majed Al Ansari, condemned the attack on the field — described as an extension of Qatar’s North Field — calling it a “dangerous and irresponsible step.”

Channel 12 reported that further strikes on Iranian energy facilities were threatened as part of the same approach.

The reports frame the strike as part of coordinated US-Israeli efforts tied to concerns over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
