Israel wins second medal in Rio Paralympics

Israel was again filled with pride on Monday when Paralympic athlete Doron Shaziri won the bronze medal in the men’s three-stage shooting competition at a distance of 50 meters at the 2016 Rio games.

Israeli rower Morane Samuel was the first Israeli Paralympian to win a medal at the Rio games, taking home a bronze on Sunday.

Abdullah Sultan, an athlete from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who won the silver medal, shook Shaziri’s hand after they received their medals,  a sharp contrast to the Egyptian Judoka who refused to shake the hand of his Israeli opponent after losing the match.

Shaziri, 49, lost his leg as an IDF soldier in the Golani Brigade after he stepped on a landmine while operating in Lebanon in 1987.

He is considered one of the veteran athletes of the Israeli delegation and one of the top competitors in his field worldwide, Israel Radio reported.

This is his eighth Paralympic medal, including another four silver and three bronze medals.

Israel has won a total of 380 Paralympic medals, putting it thirteenth on the list of medal-winning countries.

More than 30 Israeli athletes are competing in the 2016 Paralympics in a range of events including tennis, table tennis, goalball, rowing, sailing and swimming.
