A majority of Israeli Jews prefer former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president in this November’s election, over his successor, President Joe Biden, according to a new poll.

The survey was conducted by the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI), polling 816 Israelis prior to the assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday which left the former president wounded in his right ear.

Both Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs prefer Trump over Biden, though among Israeli Jews the margin was wider, with a majority of Israeli Arabs showing no preference for either candidate.

More than half (51%) of Israeli Jews say they back the Republican candidate – who is set to formally win his party’s nomination at the convention this week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin – compared to 35% who favor the incumbent, Biden. Fourteen percent said they had no opinion.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Israeli Arabs, however, did not prefer either candidate, though a plurality (23%) said they prefer Trump over Biden, who received the backing of just 13% of Israeli Arabs.

Among Americans, Trump currently leads Biden in head-to-head matchups by an average of 2.7 points, 47.1% to 44.4%, according to the RealClearPolitics rolling average of polls.

In a five-way race, Trump’s margin widens to 4.1 points, 42.9% to 38.8%, with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in a distant third, averaging 9.4%, Jill Stein with 2.1%, and Cornell West with 1.6%.

The poll also found that Israeli Jews are less likely to believe Biden is a strong supporter of Israel, with 47% in February describing the president’s support of the Jewish state as strong, compared to just 34% now.
