French president uses address to Britain’s Parliament to call for Palestinian statehood, warns that continuation of war against Hamas threatens “collective security.”

Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip poses a threat to global “collective security,” France’s president warned Tuesday during a visit to Britain.
President Emmanuel Macron met with King Charles III at Windsor Castle on Tuesday and addressed the British Parliament as part of his three-day visit to the United Kingdom.
During his speech in Parliament, Macron denounced Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas as a “war without end and without strategic objective.”
He warned that without a permanent ceasefire to end the war, the hostilities would pose “a huge threat” not only “to the region,” but also to “our collective security.”
Macron reiterated his call for Palestinian statehood, adding that a truce in Gaza could serve as a stepping stone to “sustainable peace” in the region.
“We will fight until the very last minute in order to start the ceasefire, in order to start negotiations to get this… sustainable peace,” he said. “Together, we call for the release of all hostages. Together, we call for a ceasefire in Gaza. It is a matter of absolute urgency.”
France, along with Saudi Arabia, had been slated to host an international summit at the United Nations last month to promote unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood.
However, under pressure from the U.S., the scope of the summit’s goals was reduced before the summit itself was ultimately canceled following the outbreak of war between Israel and Iran.
Despite the setback, Macron vowed to continue promoting the two-state solution, calling it part of “the only path to peace.”
“A political way out is crucial, and I believe in the two-state solution as a basis for regional security architecture, which will enable Israel to live in peace and security alongside its neighbors,” Macron said.
Macron called for the international community to begin “working together in order to recognize a state of Palestine.”
