It’s official: Trump won’t release peace plan until after Israeli election

Trump’s envoy said that after a discussion the administration decided its peace plan will be unveiled after Israel’s September elections.

After President Donald Trump zigzagged on whether he will release details of his Mideast peace plan before or after Israel’s elections, Trump envoy Jason Greenblatt tweeted on Wednesday that the administration has settled on releasing it afterwards.

“We have decided that we will not be releasing the peace vision (or parts of it) prior to the Israeli election,” Greenblatt tweeted.

Greenblatt is a central member of the team, led by Trump son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, tasked with developing Trump’s peace plan.

He made his remarks in the wake of Trump’s back-and-forth regarding the drop time of the deal.

On August 18, Trump told reporters, “we’ll probably wait” to release details of the Middle East peace plan until after Israel’s elections.

On Monday, Trump reversed himself, saying he might release his Mideast peace plan prior to Israel’s election. He made his remarks while talking to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Biarritz, France.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on Greenblatt’s tweet on Wednesday.

“Tonight we were told that President Trump’s Deal of the Century will be presented to the world after the election. I have a reasonable estimate that it will be very soon after the elections,” Netanyahu said at a conference.

Netanyahu added, referring to his political rival Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid of the Blue and White party: “Who do you want to negotiate with President Trump over the Deal of Century? Me, at the head of a right-wing government and the Likud, or Gantz and Lapid?”

Observers say that the Trump plan will have an uphill battle given the Palestinian Authority’s out-of-hand rejection of any proposals coming out of the U.S. administration to date and the fact that it has boycotted the White House since December 2017.

Israel’s election will be held on September 17.
