JD Vance: Iran war isn’t over but won’t be forever

The American vice president said that Operation Epic Fury aims to “neuter” Iran’s military capabilities.

Vice President JD Vance said the war with Iran will continue “a little while longer” until the regime is “neutered,” meaning that the United States will not need to conduct another military operation against the Islamic Republic in the foreseeable future.

Vance made the remarks during an interview with conservative YouTube host Benny Johnson, signaling that the U.S. is not aiming for the permanent defeat of the Iranian regime, which would require the current ayatollah-led government to be ousted, but rather to degrade the country’s military capabilities.

“The president’s going to keep at it for a little while longer to ensure that once we leave, we don’t have to do this again for a very, very long time,” Vance said.

He added that the U.S. has already achieved the “vast majority” of its military objectives, stressing that Operation Epic Fury is intended to be a “short-term” campaign.

Vance, who served as a media relations officer in the Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq, argued that the war is necessary for U.S. national security.

“This country is threatening us in all these ways. They’re still trying to build a nuclear weapon. We need to neuter them for a very, very long time, and that’s the purpose,” he said.

Addressing the potential length of the conflict, now in its fifth week, Vance pledged that Epic Fury would not become another American “forever war” in the Middle East.

The White House has said the war was expected to last four to six weeks.

“We’re not interested in being in Iran a year down the road or two years down the road. We’re taking care of business. We’re going to be out of there soon,” he said.

Vance also said that once the conflict ends, “gas prices are going to come back down,” describing the recent spike in global energy costs as “temporary.”
