Jeremy Corbyn launches new party ‘absolutely opposed to Zionism’

MP Jeremy Corbyn, former head of Labour UK, forms new far-left political party that he vows will openly oppose Zionism.

Former UK Labour Party chairman Jeremy Corbyn has launched a new far-left political party, one which he declared would stand in “absolute opposition to Zionism.”

On Sunday, Corbyn, an MP representing Islington North in Greater London, spoke with activists aligned with the newly formed Your Party during an event in Wandsworth.

Established six weeks ago, Your Party has positioned itself to the left of Labour, with an emphasis on anti-Zionism and support for the Palestinian cause.

In response to questions posed by a party activist at Sunday’s gathering, Corbyn vowed Your Party would take a stridently anti-Israel, anti-Zionist position.

“The whole Zionist project was about expanding Israel forevermore, which is exactly what Netanyahu is doing with the Greater Israel project,” Corbyn said, while accusing the Jewish state of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Corbyn went on to decry Zionism as a form of British-backed imperialism and said he was in the midst of drafting an article clearly laying out his views on the Arab-Israeli conflict.

“And now we have the genocide, and it is a genocide in Gaza. We in Your Party are absolutely in solidarity with the people of Palestine and will be guided by them on the policies we develop and the direction we take going forward,” Corbyn stated.

The Your Party chairman’s comments came after similar declarations of opposition to Zionism by MP Zarah Sultana, the party co-founder who described herself as “proudly” anti-Zionist. Earlier this year, Sultana sought to position herself even further to the left of Corbyn on the issue of Israel, chiding him for backing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism.

During his tenure as head of Labour, Corbyn was embroiled in a major antisemitism scandal after the party was found by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to have “unlawfully discriminated against” Jewish members and mishandled complaints under his leadership.

Under Corbyn, the party suffered its worst general election defeat since 1935, leading to his ouster as Labour chief. In 2023, the party banned him from running as a Labour candidate.
