Jihadists plotted massacres of Jews, suicide bombing in Germany

Two lone wolf Islamist terrorists charged in separate plots to massacre Jews and “infidels” in Germany.

German authorities have brought charges in two separate cases involving jihadist plots against Jewish targets, including one in Berlin and another near a synagogue in Essen, as security concerns over antisemitic violence remain high in the country.

In Berlin, prosecutors charged a 23-year-old Syrian man with allegedly planning a knife attack on Jews and other people he considered “infidels,” according to German authorities.

Prosecutors said he had resolved last March to carry out an attack in line with Islamic State ideology and to primarily target Jews in the German capital.

The suspect is also accused of preparing a terrorist offense, financing terrorism and distributing terrorist propaganda.

The Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office said he bought a knife and materials for making explosives online and searched social media platforms such as Telegram and TikTok for content about “martyrdom” and “jihad.”

Authorities say the suspect “already began experimenting” with makeshift bombs and “planned to attack “as many Jewish people and other non-Muslims as possible.”

In addition to knife attacks, the suspect plotted to carry out a suicide bombing, prosecutors said.

In a separate case, a teenage Kosovar suspect identified as Erjon S. was charged after allegedly attacking three people and planning to kill “as many Jewish people as possible” near a synagogue in Essen, federal prosecutors said.

The teen faces three counts of attempted murder, along with assault, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

Investigators say the teen resolved to wage jihad against “perceived infidels” in Essen. He first targeted a janitor and a teacher he knew, then intended to continue toward Jewish targets near the synagogue.

The new charges come against a backdrop of rising antisemitism in Germany.

Reuters reported last year that antisemitic incidents in the country almost doubled in 2024.

Germany has recently faced a series of recent extremist cases involving Jewish targets. Last month, AP reported that a Berlin court sentenced a Syrian man to 13 years in prison for stabbing a Spanish tourist at the Holocaust Memorial in February 2025 after choosing the site in hopes of targeting Jewish individuals.
