Lebanese investigators probe possible Israeli abduction of former officer tied to Ron Arad disappearance

Lebanese investigators are examining the possibility that Ahmad Shukr, a former Lebanese security officer who disappeared last week, was abducted by Israel in what officials describe as a covert intelligence operation, according to a senior legal source cited Tuesday by Asharq Al-Awsat.

The source said the inquiry has increasingly focused on the theory that Shukr was taken through an “intelligence entrapment operation,” citing suspicions tied to his alleged connections to the 1986 abduction of Israeli airman Ron Arad in southern Lebanon. Shukr, who previously served in Lebanon’s General Security apparatus, vanished five days ago after traveling to the town of Nabi Sheet in the northern Bekaa Valley.

Investigators believe Shukr may have been targeted after “falling victim to a sophisticated recruitment operation” in the Bekaa region, the source said, attributing the assessment to Lebanese intelligence findings. Authorities have not publicly detailed how such an operation may have unfolded.

According to the same source, preliminary inquiries identified the presence of two Swedish nationals, one of whom is of Lebanese origin, who visited Lebanon shortly before Shukr’s disappearance. One of the two reportedly departed the country on the same day Shukr was last seen, a detail investigators are reviewing as part of the case.

Lebanese police have so far reported no physical, electronic, or technological evidence indicating that Shukr remains inside Lebanon. The absence of such findings, the source said, has reinforced the assessment that he may have been transferred outside the country, potentially to Israel.

They noted that he is the brother of Hassan Shukr, a Hezbollah operative killed during an Israeli military operation in 1988, when Israeli forces raided Hezbollah and allied group positions in Lebanon. Hassan Shukr was part of the cell involved in Ron Arad’s abduction, after which Arad was moved to an unknown location and disappeared.

Ahmad Shukr is also related to Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah’s chief of staff, who was killed in an Israeli strike roughly a year and a half ago.

Lebanese authorities have not issued an official conclusion on Shukr’s fate, and the investigation remains ongoing as security agencies continue to review intelligence and cross-border implications of the case.
