Less than half of US Jews believe two-state solution is viable – poll

New survey finds strong support among American Jews for Trump’s Gaza peace plan while most are critical of Netanyahu.

American Jews strongly back President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, a new poll shows, while less than half say Israel should pursue a final status agreement with the Palestinian Authority on the basis of a two-state solution.

On Tuesday, the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI) released the results of its October Jewish Voice Index, conducted among American Jews.

The survey found that 73% of American Jews support Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, compared to just 8% who oppose it.

A majority of respondents (54%) credited Trump primarily for the hostage release deal. Only 7% credited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and another 7% credited Arab leaders in the region.

When asked who won the war in Gaza, half said there was no clear victor, while 36% said Israel won, with just 10% saying Israel lost the war against Hamas.

Self-identified conservatives were more likely to say Israel won, with 53% giving this response, while more than half (57%) of respondents who described themselves as very liberal said that the war ended with no victor.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents (61%) rated Netanyahu’s leadership negatively, compared to 37% who rated it positively, though the vast majority (85%) of Jewish Trump voters rated Netanyahu’s leadership positively.

Trump also received poor marks from 56% of US Jews, with just 35% viewing his job performance positively.

While American Jews are more likely than Israeli Jews to back a two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state, this position was favored by a minority of US Jews.

Less than half (45%) of US Jews believe that a future Palestinian state could coexist peacefully next to Israel, and only 39% say Israel should try to reach a peace agreement with moderate Palestinians and allow the establishment of a peaceful Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Among Israeli Jews, just 15% backed Palestinian statehood, according to a recent JPPI poll.

About a third (34%) of US Jews believe Israel should pursue full separation from the Palestinians, dismantle outlying settlements in Judea and Samaria, and focus on maintaining IDF freedom of action to prevent terror groups from rising in the area.

A total of 21% say Israel should strengthen its control over the Palestinians, expand settlements, consider dismantling the Palestinian Authority, and possibly annex parts of Judea and Samaria — a view shared by 42% of Israeli Jews.
