Preliminary findings released Sunday by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia indicate that Sen. Lindsey Graham died from an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
The medical examiner said the findings are preliminary and that Graham’s death certificate will remain pending until toxicological and microscopic testing has been completed.
“The death certificate will be pending until all the toxicological and microscopic testing are finalized,” the office said in a statement. “At that point the death certificate will be updated to reflect the cause of death and appropriately classify the manner of death.”
Graham, one of Israel’s strongest allies in the U.S. Senate and a close ally of President Donald Trump, died Saturday evening at the age of 71 following what his office described as a brief and sudden illness.
