Mideast talks on verge of breakthrough; Iran expected to respond to US proposal Thursday – report

Iran and the US are reportedly on the verge of agreeing to a memorandum that would establish a framework for a final deal.

The United States and Iran are moving closer to a short memorandum that could end the war and open a new 30-day negotiation period on unresolved issues, CNN reported Wednesday, citing a regional source familiar with the talks.

The White House received positive feedback Tuesday from Pakistani mediators, who said Iran appeared to be moving toward a compromise, two Trump administration officials said. The officials, however, cautioned that previous rounds of talks had collapsed at the last minute.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the US had held “very good talks” with Iran over the previous 24 hours while also warning that military action could resume if Tehran does not agree to a deal.

“Yeah, I think so, but I felt that way before with them, so we’ll see what happens,” Trump told PBS News when asked whether a deal could be reached soon.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that if Iran does not reach an agreement, the “bombing starts” and would be of a “higher level and intensity than it was before.”

According to CNN, a one-page plan being discussed internally would declare an end to the war and begin a 30-day negotiation period covering nuclear issues, frozen Iranian assets and future security in the Strait of Hormuz.

A regional source told CNN that Iran is expected to give mediators its response Thursday.

The exact terms of the proposal could not be immediately verified. A source familiar with the plan said it would include discussion of a moratorium on uranium enrichment lasting more than 10 years.

A previous US proposal had called for a 20-year moratorium, while Iran had pushed for a five-year ban.

The plan would also require Iran to ship its stockpile of highly enriched uranium out of the country, though details remained under negotiation.

Trump told PBS News that a potential deal would include Iran shipping the material to the United States and pledging not to operate its underground facilities.

But the idea of sending the uranium to the US helped derail Vice President JD Vance’s talks with Iranian officials in Pakistan last month.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran was still reviewing the latest US proposal.

“The US plan and proposal is still under review by Iran, and after finalizing its viewpoints, Iran will convey them to the Pakistani side,” Baghaei told Iran’s ISNA news agency.
