‘No mistake’: Vance’s Chanukah party invitation deliberately includes ‘Christmas branding’

A Chanukah reception hosted by Vice President JD Vance drew unexpected attention this week after invitations sent from his residence featured Christmas branding across the top of the card.

The invitation, which was circulated online by Jewish Insider correspondent Gabby Deutch, announced a December 15 Chanukah gathering but carried the headline: “The Golden Noel: Celebrating 50 Years of Christmas at the Vice President’s Residence.”

The text beneath that header extended an invitation from “the vice president & the second lady” to attend a Chanukah reception at the residence.

The contrast between the event description and the Christmas-themed banner quickly spread on social media, prompting comparisons to a similar mistake made during the George W. Bush administration.

In 2008, invitations for that year’s Chanukah celebration were printed with images of Christmas trees, a mix-up the White House later described as a staff oversight.

The invitation linked to Vance led to questions about whether this year’s holiday card was the result of a printing error or a misunderstanding.

A spokesperson for the vice president rejected that interpretation and said the design reflected a uniform theme used for all seasonal events at the residence.

“The same branding for invitations was used for all holiday parties at the Vice President’s Residence,” the spokesperson told The Independent.

“The Vance family is celebrating 50 historic years of Christmas at the Vice President’s Residence. They look forward to welcoming all of their guests.”

The image posted by Deutch showed the full layout, including the decorative script used for “Golden Noel” above the Christmas reference.

The event itself remains scheduled for December 15 as a cocktail reception honoring Chanukah.

The resurfacing of the 2008 episode added to the discussion surrounding the new invitation, though the circumstances differ.

At that time, Bush Press Secretary Sally McDonough apologized and attributed the printing error to a failure to produce separate card designs for various observances.

This year’s explanation from the vice president’s office maintained that the holiday motif was deliberate and applied across the invitation suite.
