Omar, Tlaib endorsed for re-election by MoveOn progressive advocacy group

The two freshman congresswomen are praised notwithstanding their controversial positions, including support for BDS and the radical Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), known for her use of anti-Semitic tropes in criticizing Israel, has received the first endorsement for the 2020 election from MoveOn, an American progressive public policy advocacy group and political action committee.

“The results are in: With 77% of votes cast in favor, MoveOn members in Minnesota’s 5th District have voted overwhelmingly to endorse Ilhan Omar for re-election to Congress,” the group writes on its website.

Upon winning the congressional election in November 2018, Omar was faced with backlash over comments she had already made against Israel, including in 2012, when she said that the Jewish State had “hypnotized the world.”

Since beginning her term in the U.S. House of Representatives in January, she has created more controversy by accusing the AIPAC lobby group of paying off politicians to gain support for Israel and challenging the loyalty to America of pro-Israel activists.

“Rep. Omar is a uniquely powerful, compelling member of Congress,” says MoveOn, adding that “despite racist and anti-Muslim attacks to silence the first Black, Muslim congresswoman in the United States—and blatant attempts to incite violence against her and Muslim communities—Rep. Omar has continued to speak out.”

MoveOn also stated that it was “proud to announce that its political action members in Michigan’s 13th congressional district have voted overwhelmingly to back Rep. Rashida Tlaib for Congress.”

Tlaib has been involved in efforts to boycott Israel and has supported the extremist Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

However, MoveOn says that she “has emerged as a leader in calling for the impeachment of Trump over his outrageous abuses of power and our MoveOn members are proud to stand by her as continues her fight with our support.”
