UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. (X)
Francesca Albanese triggered a storm of criticism after publishing remarks accused of echoing antisemitic tropes and distorting Holocaust history while attacking Germany’s support for Israel.
In a controversial social media post, Albanese argued that Germany’s backing of Israel does not stem from genuine remorse over Nazi crimes, but from what she described as an unresolved “historical superiority syndrome.” She called on Germans to free themselves from what she portrayed as an obligation toward Israel.
Albanese further claimed that Jews were accepted by the West only after proving they could become “superior,” before questioning whether Israel now sees itself as “chosen to rule” — comments critics condemned as deeply antisemitic and dangerously inflammatory.
The UN official also accused Germany of discriminating against anti-Zionist Jews and repeated accusations portraying Israel as a threat to humanity, further fueling international calls for her removal from her UN position.
