PA head meets Jordanian king over Trump’s embassy plan

Abbas met with the Jordanian monarch to discuss potential measures in response to Trump’s plan to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas met with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Amman regarding US President Donald Trump’s plan to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“Abbas and King Abdullah II discussed the possible ramifications of moving the American Embassy to occupied Jerusalem and agreed to take a number of measures if the embassy is relocated,” the PA’s Wafa outlet reported on Sunday.

Abbas said earlier in January that moving the US embassy to Jerusalem would be an “aggressive” move that crosses a “red line.” Shortly thereafter, the PA chairman begged political leaders around the world to stop Trump from moving ahead with his plan.

Writing to Trump, Abbas said that such a move would “likely have a disastrous impact on the peace process.” A week later, he said that rescinding the Palestine Liberation Organization’s recognition of the state of Israel was under consideration as a possible response if Trump goes forward with the embassy move.
