Palestinians protest against Trump

Palestinians demonstrated against Trump during the US presidential inauguration.

Palestinians in Bethlehem protested against Donald Trump on Friday, burning his photos as he was being sworn in as the 45th president of the United States.

Participants in the violent incident told the Palestinian Ma’an news agency that the event was a message of rejection of the president and the new administration’s support for moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Journalist Muhammad al-Lahham, who joined in the protest, said the event was held as a warning of the chaos that will erupt, both in the Palestinian Authority (PA) and around the Muslim world, if Trump goes through with moving the embassy.

“Trump supporting this Jewish state is exactly like supporting ISIS,” al-Lahham stated, reiterating a Palestinian comparison between Islamic State terrorists and the Jewish state.

Trump’s campaign promise to move the US embassy was met with applause by Israel but was strongly condemned by the Palestinians.

Last month, Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Secretary-General Saeb Erekat threatened that the PLO will revoke all previously signed agreements with Israel, including the PLO’s 1993 recognition of Israel, if Trump follows through with his pledge to move the embassy to Jerusalem.
