Palestinian journalism agency blasts Hamas over assaults

Hamas terrorists accused of assaulting three Arab reporters in the Gaza Strip, leading Palestinian Journalists Syndicate to openly condemn the terror group.

A Palestinian journalists’ association on Sunday issued a rare condemnation of the Hamas terror organization, accusing terrorists affiliated with the group of physically assaulting three Arab reporters in the Gaza Strip recently.

In a statement issued by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, members of Hamas’ Sahm Unit – a special force within the Hamas-run Gaza police department – were accused of harassing and assaulting three Arab journalists on duty in the southern Gaza Strip.

The PJS did not provide details regarding the timing of the incident but said that it occurred outside the Nasser Medical Center in Khan Yunis.

The hospital, which has been targeted in the past by Israel’s military, has been used as a regional command and control center by Hamas operatives.

According to the PJS, the journalists assaulted by Sahm members include Khaled Shaat, a correspondent for Kanaan News Agency and Radio Hayat in Jordan; Al Jazeera cameraman Mohammad Salama; and Abdullah Al-Attar, a correspondent for Turkey’s Anadolu Agency.

“The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate strongly condemns the assault and harassment of several journalist colleagues by security personnel from the Sahm Unit and the General Investigations Department affiliated with the Hamas movement in Gaza during their professional duties near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip,” the Syndicate said.

The PJS called the incident a “serious violation of press freedom” that “threatens the safety of journalists” covering the war in Gaza.

“Attacking journalists and preventing them from doing their jobs is an unacceptable and condemned behavior,” it added.

The NGO went on to demand a full investigation into the assaults.

Sunday’s statement marks a rare open criticism by the PJS of the Gaza terror group, which is especially noteworthy considering the PJS’ strongly anti-Israel position.
