Palestinian terrorists fire at Israeli naval vessel

Israel keeps a close watch on Gaza’s coast and waters to prevent smuggling and terror-related activity, coming under attack occasionally by Palestinian terrorists.

Terrorists in Gaza on Thursday fired at an Israeli naval vessel operating along Gaza’s coast. No IDF soldiers were harmed in the incident. The sailors fired back at the source of fire.

An IDF spokesman said the naval vessel approached two Palestinian fishermen who had strayed from the allowed fishing zone in the northern Strip, on the border with Israel. The ship called on the fishermen to sail back to the allowed zone and fired warning shots, from which one of the fishermen was wounded.

He was taken for medical treatment, and will later be taken for questioning by Israeli security forces.

The second suspect managed to get away and return to Gaza’s coast.

Israel limits Gaza’s fishing zone because of terrorism and because of smuggling attempts of armaments into Gaza, in which many Palestinian fishermen are involved.

Israel’s navy in April apprehended a Palestinian fisherman off the coast of Gaza who was active in Hamas’ maritime smuggling operation.

During his questioning by the Shin Bet, he revealed Hamas’ methods of smuggling weapons and materials used for Hamas’ military build-up and how he was active in the operation.

He also shared Hamas’ marine military plans and exposed how Hamas was using fishermen to disguise its terror-related activities. He also divulged information on Hamas’ smuggling routes from Egypt.
