Palestinian protesters took to the streets on Saturday, burning effigies of US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, reported Palestinian news channel Wattan. The protests took place in Aida, north of Bethlehem, where demonstrators staged mock executions of the US leaders.
According to Wattan, the protesters were demonstrating against US cuts to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), a UN body devoted solely to funneling aid to Palestinians in Judea and Samaria, Gaza, Jordan, and Lebanon.
Among the signs displayed at the Aida protests were placards equating Zionism with Nazism, and others comparing the US to the Islamic State. Such tropes have become commonplace in pro-Palestinian demonstrations throughout the world, which have garnered greater attention following the US’ official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
In related news, security forces on Saturday morning found 12 explosive devices connected with electric cables ear the road connecting Palestinian Authority (PA) cities of Illar and Atil to Tulkarem, reported Arutz Sheva.
According to the Arab media outlet Kan, the devices were intended to harm IDF soldiers on patrol in the area, but were detonated in a controlled explosion.
