President Trump answers question about whether he will run again

Under the 22nd Amendment, a president can be elected only twice. Though some supporters have floated the idea of amending the Constitution to allow for nonconsecutive additional terms.

In a Tuesday interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, President Donald Trump responded to questions about a possible 2028 White House bid, leaving his long-term political plans open to interpretation.

Asked directly by anchor Rebecca Quick whether he would run again, Trump replied, “No, probably not.” But moments later, he added, “I’d like to run. I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had. You know why. Because people love the tariffs, and they love the trade deals, and they love that countries… aren’t ripping us off.”

The conversation came amid Trump’s broader criticism of 2024 election-related data, including what he claimed were “rigged” job numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As the discussion shifted to electoral performance, Trump said, “I got the highest vote in the history of Texas, a record that they say won’t be beaten unless I run again.” CNBC later confirmed the claim.

While Trump’s comments appeared to downplay a future run, he didn’t rule it out entirely.

In past interviews, he has responded similarly. In May, he told MSNBC’s Kristen Welker that although many people were encouraging him to run again, “this is not something I’m looking to do.”

“There are many people selling the 2028 hat,” he added. “I’m looking to having four great years, and turn it over to somebody—ideally a great Republican. A great Republican to carry it forward.”

He named Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as possible standard-bearers for the movement after his current term.

Under the 22nd Amendment, a president can be elected only twice. Though some supporters have floated the idea of amending the Constitution to allow for nonconsecutive additional terms, Trump has not endorsed such efforts.
