In the wake of Sunday night’s terrorist attack at the Ofra Junction in Samaria, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said, “We will not rest until we find these murderous criminals and bring them to justice.”
He added that “everyone is praying for the recovery of a young mother who is fighting for her life, as well as her baby. “We also wish a speedy recovery for all the wounded,” he said.
Netanyahu referred to a 21-year-old woman, who was seriously injured in the attack. The medical team at Shaare Tzedek hospital in Jerusalem succeeded in delivering the baby.
Dr. Alon Schwartz, a senior surgeon at Shaare Tzedek, said that the woman, Shira Yael bat Liora, suffered from “gunshot wounds in the pelvic area and abdomen. The woman arrived in critical condition, she lost a lot of blood, received blood transfusions, was stabilized and was taken to the operating room for urgent emergency surgery. She underwent a caesarean section and then surgery to treat her injuries. The baby is in the NICU [neonatal intensive care unit] and is being evaluated.”
Early reports Monday morning said the woman was in serious condition but the baby’s condition was deteriorating.
The woman was with her husband at the hitchhiking stop after visiting family. He was also injured in the attack and is listed in moderate condition.
The head of security for Beit El, a Jewish town near Ofra, said there’s no question that the quick evacuation of the wounded saved lives.
