Putin, Muslim and Arab states join Gaza Board of Peace

Trump announces Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted his invitation to join the Board of Peace, as eight Muslim and Arab states also sign on.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the newly formed Board of Peace, Trump announced on Wednesday.

Speaking with reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump acknowledged that the Board of Peace has invited “controversial” figures, defending the decision to include Putin despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“I have some controversial people on it, but these are people who get the job done,” Trump said. “These are people who have tremendous influence.”

“We want all nations where people have control and power,” the president continued. “If I put all babies on the board, there wouldn’t be very much. So he was invited. He’s accepted.”

Echoing his recent criticism of the United Nations, Trump said the Board of Peace would take on roles which fall under the purview of the UN.

The Board of Peace, he said, “is going to get a lot of work done that the United Nations should have done, and we’ll work with the United Nations.”

Trump has recently suggested the Board of Peace could serve as a replacement for the UN.

In addition to Russia, eight Muslim and Arab states have accepted Trump’s invitation to join the Board of Peace.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, the foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates said that “each country will sign the joining documents.”

The eight Muslim and Arab states reiterated their support for the Trump administration’s Gaza peace plan, and the Board of Peace’s role in Gaza “as a transitional administration,” tasked with “consolidating a permanent ceasefire, supporting the reconstruction of Gaza, and advancing a just and lasting peace grounded in the Palestinian right to self-determination and statehood in accordance with international law, thereby paving the way for security and stability for all countries and peoples of the region.”
