Report: Iran plotted terror attacks on Israeli embassies in Africa

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps recruited Ugandan to surveil Israeli embassies in two African countries and to acquire guns and hand grenades in preparation for planned terror attacks.

Iran plotted to carry out terrorist attacks on two Israeli embassies in Africa recently and recruited a local agent to conduct surveillance and acquire weapons for the attacks, according to a report by Iran International.

The report cited materials from a European intelligence source, which stated that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) enlisted the efforts of a Ugandan construction worker who was tasked with collecting intelligence on the Israeli embassies in Kampala, Uganda, and Dakar, Senegal.

The man, who was given the code name “Rambo,” was also instructed by his handlers to acquire handguns and grenades for use in the attacks.

According to the report, Rambo’s recruiter was identified as Zahid Jawad, a Pakistani national working on behalf of the IRGC’s Quds Force.

Intelligence sources cited in the report also named three Iranian agents involved in the plot, including Meysam Sahraei, Reza Ghabadi, and Abbas Mohammad Naeim. All three are said to work for the IRGC Quds Force’s Unit 840, a division which Western intelligence agencies believe is responsible for operations targeting dissidents and Israeli and American interests abroad.

While Rambo was given instructions on how to locate and purchase the needed weapons, with his handlers offering to transfer the necessary funds, it is unclear whether the money was ever delivered or if Rambo actually carried out the surveillance he was tasked with.

An intelligence source cited in the report described Iran’s method of using foreign nationals to recruit additional foreign nationals as a “proxy-of-a-proxy” model.

A similar pattern was reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo several years ago, when a Congolese student studying at Al-Mustafa International University in Qom was allegedly tasked with scouting potential targets under the direction of a Pakistani member of the Zainabiyoun Brigade.
