A new report suggests Jordanian spies were the original sources of intelligence information that was reportedly conveyed by Trump to Russian officials.
The intelligence information relating to an Islamic State (ISIS) terror plot that was reportedly passed on by US President Donald Trump to Russian Ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak, and Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, during a meeting at the White House last week, came from Jordanian and not Israeli spies as originally reported, according to an Al-Jazeera report.
While an ABC report said that the life of an Israeli spy was consequentially placed at risk for the intelligence sharing with Russia, Al-Jazeera said that at least several Jordanian officials doubted the conclusion.
“When it comes to ISIS, unlike Jordan, Israel relies on its electronic surveillance collection and its intelligence sharing-arrangement with its Arab partners,” one source was quoted as saying.
The sources added that Jordan relies on gathering intelligence from its own spies on the ground instead of working with other countries. As a result, the intelligence that was collected by Israel and subsequently shared with the United States at least partially came from Jordanian intelligence.
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) won’t confirm or deny the al-Jazeera report.
Earlier this week, officials in the Trump administration denied that the US president revealed highly sensitive intelligence to Russia.
“I was in the room, it didn’t happen,” said Trump’s National Security Adviser, H.R. McMaster told reporters on Monday.
“At no time were intelligence sources or methods discussed, and the president did not disclose any military operations that were not already publicly known.”
