Russia objects to Trump calling Iran the ‘number one terrorist state’

The Russian government made its disagreement with Trump’s position on Iran understood.

The Kremlin noted its objections to US President Donald Trump’s assessment of Iran being the “number one terrorist state,” which he voiced in an interview aired Sunday with Fox News host Bill O’Reilly.

“We do not agree with that,” the Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.  “It’s no secret for anyone that Moscow and Washington hold diametrically opposed views on many international issues.”

“Russia has warm relations with Iran,” Peskov said. “We cooperate on a wide range of issues, value our trade ties and hope to develop them further.”

Trump also accused Iran of sending money and weapons “all over the place.”

Before leaving his post, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon expressed similar concerns to the Security Council, specifically regarding Iran’s transferring of weapons to the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah.

Trump told O’Reilly that the Iran nuclear agreement in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 powers “was the worst deal I’ve ever seen negotiated.”

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov urged the US not to scrap or change the existing agreement. “Do not try to fix something that is not broken, Ryabkov told Security Index Magazine.

“If someone tries to rewrite the [nuclear] agreement, he will open a Pandora’s box,” Ryabkov stated. “It would be just too risky to make an attempt to launch a new process on such a significant issue and to seek new agreement terms.”
