Senate blocks attempt to impose limits on Iran conflict

For the second time in less than a month, Senate Democrats attempt to force an end to the Iran conflict using war powers resolution.

The United States Senate has rejected an attempt to impose restrictions on the conflict with Iran aimed at forcing President Donald Trump to end hostilities with the Islamic Republic.

On Wednesday, the Senate voted 53 to 47 against a war powers resolution drafted by Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey.

The vote was almost entirely along party lines, with 52 of the upper chamber’s 53 Republicans voting against the resolution, and 46 of the 47 senators who caucus with Democrats voting in favor of the measure.

Among Republicans, only libertarian-leaning Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul backed the resolution, while Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman was the lone Democrat to vote against the resolution.

The resolution would have, if passed, instructed President Trump to “remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for use of military force.”

The draft resolution did not require the US to halt assistance to Israel and other US allies in the region “who have been attacked by Iran since February 28, 2026.”

This is the second time Senate Democrats have attempted to pass a war powers resolution blocking the White House from continuing Operation Epic Fury against Iran.

On March 4, a war powers resolution introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia was rejected in an identical vote, with Sen. John Fetterman again joining 52 Republicans in voting down the measure, while 46 Democrats and Sen. Rand Paul voted in favor of the resolution.

Senate Democrats have repeatedly demanded that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth agree to appear before Congress to publicly respond to lawmakers’ questions regarding the conflict with Iran.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Democratic senators who pushed the March 4 resolution said they would continue their attempts to pass a war powers resolution unless Rubio and Hegseth agreed to testify.
