Iranian proxies plotting to assassinate top Israeli officials

Iran using terrorist proxies in bid to assassinate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials as part of revenge plot.

The Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah and other Iranian proxy groups are orchestrating plots to assassinate various Israeli leaders and former leaders as part of a larger effort to exact revenge against Israel on behalf of Iran, Israel Hayom reported on Tuesday.

The plot was first devised by Iran in 2020, following a string of high-profile assassinations of Iranian officials by the US and Israel, including the killings of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani and nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

Over the next few years, Iran enlisted its terrorist proxies, including Hezbollah, to plan the assassinations of various Israeli officials and former officials.

Israel first uncovered the plot in late 2023, after a failed attempt to kill former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon with a makeshift explosive device in a Tel Aviv park.

Iran ratcheted up its efforts to kill Israeli leaders after the Hamas invasion of October 2023.

Since the September 2023 bombing attempt in Tel Aviv, Israeli intelligence agencies have found that the botched bombing was not an isolated incident by a terror cell operating independently.

Instead, the investigation into the plot against Ya’alon revealed that the bombing attempt is part of a massive revenge plot orchestrated by Iran.

The attempted attack on Ya’alon was later found to be linked to Hezbollah, which organized a terror cell inside Israel on behalf of Iran, with orders from Tehran to kill the former Israeli Defense Minister.

Since the beginning of the war in October 2023, Israeli authorities have uncovered 38 cases of Israeli citizens working as agents of Iran, including 13 instances in which the suspects were involved in plots against Israeli officials or former leaders.

The targets of the various plots included Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, former Defense Minister Benny Gantz, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, former IDF chief of staff Herzi Halevi, former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, and a senior academic at the Institute for National Security Studies.
