Switzerland rejects Palestinian state recognition

Switzerland’s National Council voted 116–66 against recognizing a Palestinian state, citing the absence of a unified and functioning government.

Lawmakers noted that Gaza remains under Hamas control—classified as a terrorist organization—while the Palestinian Authority lacks effective authority across the territory, failing key criteria for statehood under international law.

Officials warned that recognition now could undermine Switzerland’s neutrality and mediation role, while reaffirming support for a two-state solution once viable conditions are met.
