The suspect arrested for attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump and other senior administration officials held “multiple social and political grievances,” and the U.S.-Israel war against Iran may have been a motivating factor in his decision to attack, according to an intelligence report.
The report by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis, viewed by Reuters, preliminarily outlined Cole Allen’s reasons for launching the attack, some of which he detailed in a manifesto sent to family and friends shortly before the attempted shooting.
Allen, who was stopped outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner before he could shoot any politicians, is believed to have wounded a Secret Service agent during the scuffle. He is facing charges including attempted assassination, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, assault on a federal officer, and illegal transportation of a firearm and ammunition across state lines.
Allen’s social media accounts, filled with anti-Trump rhetoric, reportedly revealed deep opposition to the Trump administration’s policies.
An official speaking anonymously confirmed to Reuters that Allen’s social media activity is a major focus of the ongoing investigation.
His digital footprint is “being closely looked at,” the official said.
Investigators reportedly identified a recent post in which Allen called for Trump to be impeached over the war with Iran.
According to the intelligence report, that military conflict “may have contributed to his decision to conduct the attack.”
In other posts, Allen allegedly referred to Trump as a “traitor” and expressed frustration over what he described as activists’ failure to stop the president.
“Everyone already knows trump is a f**king awful person in multiple dimensions and no one has done sh*t,” read a post attributed to an account belonging to Allen.
Court documents released to the media stated that Allen expressed a desire “to ‘fight back’ against government policies and decisions that he found morally objectionable.”
