President Donald Trump revealed that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was prepared to enter the Iran war—possibly on Tehran’s side—but ultimately stayed out after a personal request from the US president.
“He was a prime candidate to go into the war with Iran, maybe on the Iran side, because he’s not a big fan of Israel,” Trump said, adding that “everything I’ve ever asked him for, he’s done.”
Trump also disclosed he will travel to Ankara in two weeks at Erdogan’s invitation and suggested he is prepared to approve military sales that would make Turkey “very happy,” including possible F-35 fighter jets.
The revelation raises new questions about what role Turkey was prepared to play behind the scenes during the regional war—and what understandings may now be taking shape between Washington and Ankara.
