Trump: No federal cash for NYC under ‘communist’ Mamdani

In a social media post, the president urged New York voters to support Andrew Cuomo, saying they “have no choice.”

President Donald Trump urged New York City voters to support Andrew Cuomo over Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, warning that if the latter wins, he would likely cut federal funding to the city.

“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform hours before Election Day.

“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” Trump added, referencing his pride in being a native New Yorker.

The post marked the second time within days that Trump publicly pushed for Cuomo’s election. In a 60 Minutes interview aired over the weekend, Trump again labeled Mamdani a communist and insinuated that New York would not receive federal resources under a Mamdani administration.

“It’s going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there,” Trump said.

“So I don’t know that he’s won, and I’m not a fan of Cuomo one way or the other, but if it’s going to be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’m gonna pick the bad Democrat all the time, to be honest with you.”

Cuomo, a former Democrat now running as an independent, previously served as governor of New York before resigning following multiple sexual harassment scandals.

Mamdani, a Ugandan-born far-left Democratic candidate, has backed progressive policies including rent freezes, tax increases, and reducing police powers.

Speaking at a rally shortly after Trump’s posts, Mamdani — considered the clear front-runner, leading by double digits in recent polling — spoke about the endorsement.

“Trump’s understanding [is] that this would be the best mayor for him – not the best mayor for New York City, not the best mayor for New Yorkers, but the best mayor for Donald Trump and his administration,” Mamdani said.

Cuomo, acknowledging Trump’s threats, told Fox News, “Trump will go through Mamdani like a hot knife through butter.”
