Trump pushes to seal Iran deal on his birthday

US President Donald Trump is pushing to sign a framework agreement with Iran on Sunday, his birthday, calling it a landmark deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and permanently prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Trump hailed the proposed agreement as the opposite of the 2015 nuclear deal, insisting it creates “a wall to no nuclear weapon” while warning that military force remains an option if diplomacy fails. Iran, however, has disputed the timeline, saying the agreement is not expected to be signed on Sunday even as negotiations continue.

The proposal has sparked deep concern in Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to convene his security cabinet to assess the agreement. Israeli officials reportedly fear Washington has accepted many of Tehran’s core demands, leaving Iran’s missile program, terrorist proxies, and broader regional influence largely untouched.

Opposition to the deal is also crossing Israel’s political divide. Opposition leader Yair Lapid blasted the emerging agreement, arguing it “doesn’t achieve any of Israel’s war goals” because the Iranian regime survives, its missile program remains intact, and it could eventually rebuild its nuclear program. Lapid called the deal a “total failure” that turns Israel into a country taking orders on its own national security.
