Trump pushing for ‘regime change’ in Iran after diplomacy fails to make headway – report

President Trump reportedly considering large-scale campaign targeting Iran’s regime, with the goal of inspiring renewal of protest movement after government violently crushed demonstrations earlier this month.

President Donald Trump is considering launching a major campaign against Iran, this time potentially targeting the country’s leadership with the goal of encouraging regime change.

On Thursday, multiple outlets reported that the president is mulling major strikes against Iran, including a military campaign aimed at toppling the Islamic regime.

In contrast to the limited one-day air campaign in Iran last June, which was narrowly targeted against the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, President Trump is said to be aiming to lay the foundation for potential “regime change” in Tehran, two American sources familiar with the deliberations inside the White House told Reuters on Thursday.

The plan now under consideration would include targeted strikes on Iranian commanders involved in the deadly crackdown against protesters earlier this month in which thousands – and possibly tens of thousands – of dissidents were killed.

The strikes would then give insurgents the confidence to overrun regime installations and ultimately topple the government.

One source cited in the report said the administration is also considering a wide-ranging air campaign aimed at destroying Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal and preventing Tehran from resuming its uranium enrichment efforts.

No final decision has been made on war with Iran, the second source said.

A report published by CNN which cited multiple sources familiar with the discussions in the administration said that the president is seriously considering a major air campaign against Iran after talks between the two countries on Iran’s ballistic missile and uranium enrichment programs failed to make progress.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday denied reports that he had been involved in talks with the US this month, adding that there had been no contact between the two countries recently.
