Speaking at the annual meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump explained that he decided to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights after a “quickie” lesson on the area’s historical and strategic importance to the Jewish state.

“I said, fellows, do me a favor. Give me a little history, quick. I want to go fast. I got a lot of things I’m working on, China, North Korea. Give me a quickie,” Trump noted, referring to a discussion with head Mideast negotiator Jason Greenblatt, U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner.

Following the discussion, Trump signed a proclamation in March recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, territory the Jewish state captured via war with Arab nations, including Syria.

Relaying the contents of a discussion with Friedman, Trump continued, “I said, how do you like the idea of me recognizing exactly what we’re discussing? Because I agree, [Israel] need[s] it, [it] need[s] the height.”

According to Trump, Friedman reacted “like a wonderful, beautiful baby,” with the president ultimately responding, “yeah, I think I’m doing it right now. Let’s write something up.”

“We make fast decisions, and we make good decisions,” Trump concluded.
