Trump says he’d win 98% of the vote if he could run in Israel

The president tells top donors that “the Democrats hate Jewish people” after the party refused to pass a resolution against anti-Semitism.

U.S. President Donald Trump said in a speech to Republican Party donors in Florida that if he could run to be prime minister of Israel, he’d be at 98% in the polls, according to a report in the Axios news site Sunday, citing three sources in attendance.

Trump told the donors: “The Democrats hate Jewish people,” referring to the recent anti-Semitism controversies involving comments made by Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar.

The president reportedly said that he didn’t understand how any Jew could vote for a Democrat these days. Trump talked about how much he’d done for Israel, noting his historic decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, said the news site.

To prevent leaks from Trump’s Friday night speech at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, security guards made attendees put their cellphones in magnetized pouches that they carried around like purses until they left the club, according to Axios.

Trump had already called Democrats “anti-Israel” and “anti-Jewish” earlier on Friday after the House of Representatives passed a resolution which, though sparked by the Omar controversy, did not mention her by name. Nor was it limited to anti-Semitism, but also included other minorities. The House is controlled by a Democratic Party majority.

The American Jewish Committee criticized the president’s comments on Democrats, saying that “while dissenters in both parties exist, there is overwhelming consensus on the U.S.-Israel relationship and the fight against anti-Semitism. The last thing needed is to turn these issues into partisan wedges.”
