US President Donald Trump said Iran had provided a “present” tied to oil and gas and the Strait of Hormuz as he signaled potential progress toward ending the conflict and opened a five-day window for negotiations.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the development indicated movement on key issues. “They did something yesterday that was amazing — they gave us a present… that arrived today,” he said.
“It was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money, and I’m not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize,” Trump said.
“They gave it to us, and they said they were going to give it. That meant one thing to me. [That we’re] dealing with the right people… They’re the only ones [who] could have done it.”
Pressed on the nature of the gesture, Trump said, “It wasn’t nuclear related, it was oil and gas related,” and confirmed it was connected to the Strait of Hormuz, responding, “Yeah.”
Asked whether the United States would control the waterway after the war, Trump said, “We’ll have control of anything we want.”
Trump also said Iran had agreed to a key US demand regarding its nuclear program. “They’ve agreed,” he said. “They will never have a nuclear weapon. They’ve agreed to that.”
The president said he believed the conflict could end soon. “I think we’re going to end [the war],” he said.
Trump also described internal discussions with military leaders, saying they were less optimistic about a quick resolution.
He said when he told his defense secretary and military chief that he believed the war would be settled soon, they were unhappy because they wanted to continue fighting.
Iran has downplayed reports of “very good” talks but has not ruled out negotiations in the coming days as diplomatic efforts continue alongside the conflict.
