US President Donald Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested a meeting at the White House and that the visit could take place as early as next week after the president returns from the NATO summit, as the two leaders prepare to discuss regional issues following recent developments involving Iran.
Speaking to Axios in a phone interview, Trump said Netanyahu initiated the request and indicated a meeting could be scheduled soon. “We get along very good. [Netanyahu] knows who the boss is,” President Trump said.
An Israeli official said next week could prove difficult because of Trump’s planned trip to Turkey for the NATO summit on July 7-8, adding that the meeting may instead take place the following week.
Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister spoke with Trump on Friday to congratulate him on the 250th anniversary of US Independence Day.
According to the statement, Netanyahu told Trump that the United States serves as “a guarantor of global freedom” and emphasized that Israel values the close relationship between the two countries.
The statement added that the two leaders agreed to meet soon in the United States.
Axios also reported that some people close to Trump have become increasingly critical of Netanyahu in recent months.
A US official told the outlet, “Many of Trump’s closest advisers think that Bibi was wrong about everything.”
Trump signed a memorandum of understanding last month extending the ceasefire with Iran and launching new nuclear negotiations despite Netanyahu’s reservations.
He criticized Netanyahu during a phone call last month over Israel’s actions in Lebanon and that disagreements have emerged over Iran, Lebanon and other regional issues.
The president urged Israel to limit military operations in Lebanon and support a framework agreement calling for an initial withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
