Uranium found in Iran’s ‘secret atomic warehouse’ revealed by Netanyahu at UN

Uranium was found at a secret site in Tehran first revealed by Netanyahu in a speech last September at the United Nations.

It was almost exactly a year ago that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed the location, including GPS coordinates, of a “secret atomic warehouse” outside Tehran.

Though ridiculed by Iran at the time, which identified the location as a “rug factory,” it now appears that Netanyahu has been vindicated, as a Sunday Reuters report says radioactive traces of uranium were found at the site.

“What I’m about to say has not been shared publicly before,” Netanyahu told the U.N. General Assembly in a dramatic speech on Sept. 27, 2018.

“Today, I am disclosing for the first time that Iran has another secret facility in Tehran – a secret atomic warehouse for storing massive amounts of equipment and materiel from Iran’s secret nuclear weapons program.”

Netanyahu urged nuclear inspectors to check the secret warehouse “immediately.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) did pick up the Israeli prime minister’s challenge and inspected the site in April.

Earlier reports confirmed that radioactive material was found. The new wrinkle confirmed in the Reuters report is that the radioactive material was uranium, the key ingredient in developing nuclear bombs.

The report is based on the word of two diplomats familiar with the IAEA’s work. “There are lots of possible explanations,” one of them told Reuters.

Iran has refused to comment on the findings. This comes on the heels of recent reports that Iran has stopped cooperating with the IAEA’s nuclear inspectors who provide oversight on the Islamic Republic’s weapons program.

In his September speech, Netanyahu said that Iran had kept 15 kilograms of radioactive material at the warehouse. It then moved the material to different sites around the capital “in an effort to hide the evidence.”
