US envoy confident Iranian regime ‘will enter the dustbin of history’

In a Jewish New Year message extolling the strong US-Israel relationship, Ambassador David Friedman expressed confidence that the Iranian regime “will enter the dustbin of history.”

American Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, in a Jewish New Year message on Tuesday, said the US-Israel relationship is “on more solid ground than ever before.”

Before giving a toast ahead of Rosh Hashana and explaining the significance of the holiday, he focused his remarks on three positive developments over the past year: the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, the Trump administration’s new approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the embassy there.

Referring to Iran as the world’s greatest sponsor of terror and the “great challenge of our generation,” Friedman expressed confidence that the regime, thanks to current US policy, “will enter the dustbin of history.”

He also elaborated on Trump’s strategy with regard to the Palestinians, including its withdrawal from UNRWA – which perpetuates their refugee status – and the relevance of the decision not only to Israelis and Palestinians, but to the American people as well.

The billions of dollars in US aid to the Palestinians were “bringing the region no closer to peace and stability, not even by a millimeter,” he stated, adding that the US is a generous country but wants to spend its money “wisely.”

He concluded with the hope that in the coming year, the US will make a “greater contribution to a just and more humane world.”
