Rising tensions? US Air Force fighters intercepted four Russian bombers right on the country’s border, near Alaska.
A severe military incident occurred on Thursday when US Air Force fighters intercepted four Russian bombers right on the country’s border, near Alaska.
Two Russian Bear bombers, or Tupolev Tu-95, and a pair of Su-35 “Flanker” fighter jets first entered Alaska’s Air Defense Zone early this morning, US officials confirmed.
After the Russian planes were detected, two US Air Force F-22 stealth fighters that were already airborne on a patrol were dispatched towards them, Fox News reported.
US officials pointed out that the Russian jets were unarmed and did not stray from international airspace, but were just miles from the US border.
Last month, Russian bombers raised concerns when they flew several sorties very close to Alaska over a period of four days, for the first time since 2014.
This incident comes just a day after President Donald Trump spoke over the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The White House described the conversation as “a very good one.”
However, just last month, Trump described relations with Russia as at an “all-time low.”
“We’re not getting along with Russia at all – we may be at an all-time low,” he stated at the time.
