All members of the US Senate are asking for Trump to help, “enhance security measures and improve preparedness” for the Jewish community in light of a number of bomb threats against Jewish community centers.
All 100 members of the United States Senate have signed a letter requesting that the White House actively address the recent waves of bomb threats against Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) nationwide.
“We are concerned the number of incidents is accelerating and failure to address and deter these threats will place innocent people at risk and threaten the financial viability of JCCs, many of which are institutions in their communities,” the letter reads.
“These cowardly acts aim to create an atmosphere of fear and disrupt the important programs and services offered by JCCs to everyone in the communities they serve, including in our states,” the senators write in the letter.
The letter further calls on the White House to reach out to Jewish centers and institutions, “regarding victim assistance, grant opportunities or other federal assistance that may be available to enhance security measures and improve preparedness.”
The letter, written by Senators Gary Peters, Rob Portman, Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio, will be sent to US Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and FBI Director James Comey, as a JCC in Rochester, New York was evacuated early Tuesday morning in response to another bomb threat.
Later in the day, the Secure Community Network, a security arm of the Jewish Federations of North America, reported on threats against other Jewish community centers including one in Syracuse, New York; Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; Rockville, Maryland; Portland, Oregon; and Rochester, New York.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish organization that works to combat anti-Semitism, also announced that its offices received additional bomb threats.
