WATCH: Trump and Trudeau blame each other for spat at G7 summit

Amid the biggest deterioration in the Canadian-US relationship in decades, the leaders of both countries defend their positions.

At a news conference Tuesday after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, US President Donald Trump recounted his recent disagreements with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his reasons for wanting to leave the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

As the Washington Post explains, “Though Canada enjoys broadly free trade with the United States through NAFTA, it has never been absolute, and the deal makes several concessions to Canadian protectionism and politics. Chief among them are Canada’s extraordinarily high tariffs on American dairy products.”

As acknowledged by CBC/Radio Canada, ‘Canada levies a tariff of 270 percent on milk, 245 percent on cheese and 298 percent on butter in an effort to keep U.S. and other foreign dairy imports out.’”

Trump has called NAFTA a “one-sided deal” that is “unfair” to American farmers. If his administration goes ahead and imposes 25-percent tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts, Canada will likely retaliate, as Trudeau has threatened.

Trump says Trudeau’s actions will cost Canada “a lot of money.”
