‘Yahya’ surges to top 100 UK baby names post-October 7

Three variants of Muhammad appeared in the top 100, with Mohammed ranking 21st (1,760 babies) and Mohammad placing 53rd (986 babies).

While not a single British baby was named after Prime Minister Keir Starmer in 2024, 583 families chose to name their sons Yahya—the same first name as the Hamas leader who orchestrated the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust on October 7, 2023.

Official figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show Yahya rocketed 33 places to rank 93rd among the most popular baby names in England and Wales, representing the largest jump of any name in the top 100.

Muhammad claimed the top spot for the second consecutive year with 5,721 boys receiving the name, followed by Noah and Oliver.

Combined, more than 8,400 boys received some spelling of the name. Meanwhile, Vinnie claimed second place for biggest ranking jump, climbing 20 spots to 91st with 585 babies.

Although Yahya represents a traditional Islamic name with religious significance—the Arabic equivalent of John and revered as a prophet’s name—the dramatic timing of its surge has raised eyebrows.

Political commentator Douglas Murray questioned on social media: “Of course Muhammad remains the most popular boy’s name in the UK. But why might ‘Yahya’ have entered the top names for newborn Brits in the past year?”

Sinwar’s death came after IDF forces in October 2024 identified three Hamas terrorists moving through the Tel Sultan district of Rafah.

After troops opened fire, the terrorists separated, with Sinwar entering a building alone. An IDF tank then struck the structure, followed by drone surveillance.

In subsequently released footage, a masked figure identified as Sinwar was seen attacking the surveillance drone with a stick before the tank fired again, which ultimately killed the Hamas leader.

Besides masterminding the October 7 massacre, Sinwar was notorious for his early involvement in forming Hamas’s Majed squads, which targeted Arabs accused of collaborating with Israel, personally contributing to the deaths of 12 individuals.

Despite being sentenced to life imprisonment for these actions, Israeli medical intervention saved his life by treating a cancerous tumor.

He was released in the 2011 Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange, which saw over a thousand Palestinian prisoners freed.
