Negotiators continue discussions on a proposed ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the Iran conflict, with a requirement to halt fighting in Lebanon.
A US official said that Hezbollah had ignored repeated requests for a ceasefire with Israel: “Hezbollah ignored repeated requests for a ceasefire with Israel. Israel will respond to attacks targeting its soldiers and civilians. This is not the Biden administration,” the official said.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir told Israel’s security cabinet that military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon must continue amid ongoing attacks on Israeli forces and mounting casualties, sources told The Jerusalem Post.
The comments came as negotiators continue discussions on a proposed ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the Iran conflict, with a requirement to halt fighting in Lebanon.
According to the report, Zamir argued during the cabinet meeting that Israel could not halt operations while Hezbollah continued launching strikes against Israeli troops and communities in northern Israel.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich voiced similar positions on Monday, calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resume strikes on Beirut following an increase in explosive drone attacks targeting Israeli forces and northern towns.
Repeated ceasefire efforts have broken down amid continued cross-border exchanges between the sides. Israel has said that Hezbollah has continued attacks despite agreements requiring the group to disarm, while Israel has continued targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon.
A US official told The Jerusalem Post that Hezbollah had ignored repeated requests to stop firing on Israel, including what the official described as a recent ultimatum.
“Israel will never be expected to passively absorb attacks on its forces and civilians. This is not the Biden administration. The status quo is untenable,” the official said.
Zamir arrived at the cabinet meeting after visiting the IDF Northern Command on Sunday, where he conducted a situational assessment and approved operational plans for continued fighting against Hezbollah.
He later visited the headquarters of the 401st Brigade and was present there when Sgt. Nehoray Leizer was killed in an explosive drone strike.
As negotiations also continue regarding the conflict with Iran, Netanyahu said Israel remained engaged in military operations against Hezbollah.
“We are at war with Hezbollah, and we will strike it hard,” Netanyahu said, according to N12.
Netanyahu also praised residents of northern Israel for what he described as their “inspiring resilience” and said Israel had established a dedicated team focused on addressing the threat posed by Hezbollah drones.
