BBC criticized for skewing findings of UN torture commission to single out Israel

The Geneva correspondent focused the report heavily on Israel without mentioning other countries with proven human rights abuses, including China, Turkey and Russia, which have seats on the committee.

The BBC is the focus of scrutiny over its apparent bias against Israel in reporting on the findings of the U.N. Committee Against Torture.

The BBC’s Geneva correspondent summarized the findings of the committee, which reviews the issue of torture in countries that are part of the convention.

The Geneva correspondent focused the report heavily on Israel without mentioning other countries with proven human rights abuses, including China, Turkey and Russia, which have seats on the committee.

In addition, other countries that were meant to be the focus of the report—Albania, Argentina, Bahrain and Israel—were omitted, except for the latter, which was accused of having a “policy of organized and widespread torture and ill-treatment which had gravely intensified since October 7, 2023.”

However, it was the BBC report, and not the committee, that made these specific statements about the phenomenon of torture in Israel. In fact, the committee had praised Israel for its “frankness” in addressing the issue.

Head of Investigations at the Community Security Trust, Mark Goldberg, criticized the BBC report on X and began with, “First, let’s be aware that the members of the nobly titled U.N. Committee Against Torture are some of the worst rights-abusing countries in the world.”

He added, “Is the British public supposed to be putting much stock in what Turkey, Russia or China have to say about torture?”

Goldberg also took the BBC to task for ignoring the praise Israel had received for its forthrightness during the process and for failing to note that other countries besides Israel were criticized.

He concluded, “One wonders if the BBC even bothered to read any of this at all.”
